San Giuseppe Pinot Grigio

Winery: Unknown. Vintwood is the importer.
Style: Dry White
Year: 2006
Price Range: 1.5 L- $15.99
Rating: 8.5/10

This pleasant Pino Grigio is sort of an enigma. I discovered it when a guest brought it to our house during a barbeque. Since it's bottle was the scew top kind I thought it to be a real cheapo brand. Well at $16 the mag, it falls into the higher range of the jugs I've been reviewing. Also the label doesn't actually state the winery from which it comes. It's more the product of an importing/marketing cartell known as Vintwood.

In any case, San Giuseppe Pinot Grigio is surprisingly good. Lively and clean on the palate, with no off aftertastes and a good balance of sugar and acid. I've always enjoyed a Pinot Grigio of this sort. One where you had to ask the host or hostess "What wine is this?" rather than thinking to yourself "Oh, another Pinot Grigio." I've down rated it from a 9 only because of the price. You can buy a mag of Barefoot Pinot for $8.99 and the quality is just a tad less. Incidentally, my local wine merchant has discontinued the brand, as they've just raised the price by $2. So much for two middle aged guys finding themselves out of work (see the Vintwood website).
